Stock Cash Flow Excel Template
The Excel Price Feed Add-in provides many formulas which can be used to construct a cash flow statement for a stock.
What is a cash flow statement?
A cash flow statement provides a high level view of all the cash inflows that a company receives from its ongoing operations together will all the outgoing cash outflows that enable the business to operate. The details of these cash flows are released with the companys earnings announcements and are available in their annual report.
There are 3 main categories of cash flows:
- Cash from operating activities which includes income.
- Cash used for investing activities which includes investments in property, plant and equipment as well as cash used for acquisitions.
- Cash flows from financing activities which includes debt repayments and dividends paid.
The cash flow statement also provides the total cash available at the beginning of the period as well as the cash available at the end of the period. The difference between these two numbers is the net change in cash.
The stock cash flow Excel template
Our template is based on the cash flow screen on the Yahoo Finance website (under the "Financials" tab for a stock):
Below we can see an extract of the cash flow statement from Yahoo Finance for Apple stock for the financial year 2019:
The template looks very similar to the Yahoo Finance tab. Each of the cells, which contain a number, are simple Excel Price Feed formulas which reference the stock ticker (in cell A1) and the year (in cell B1):
For example, here is the formula in the "net income" column, as you can see it is a simple Excel Price Feed formula referencing the stock ticker and year:
Changing either the ticker or year will cause the formulas to update and new numbers will be downloaded from Yahoo Finance. No more copying and pasting cash flow numbers from the web into Excel!
